I also love the conversations we have while reading the kids often ask questions or tell me stories. The kids hear me tell them to use the potty, or relax and go to sleep, or share their toys a million times a day, but when I read a book about a character they can relate to and they’re doing those things it makes more of an impression on them. It’s a great way to help teach or encourage the kids to do new things without nagging them. We all relax a bit and maybe even cuddle together. I like that it’s quiet time we spend together. All of these things are important to me, but there are even better reasons to read to our kids. There are studies that show that reading to your kids helps them do better in school it helps them learn language and communication, and helps them learn things like cause and effect and concentration.
John and I started reading to Cooper before he was born we read to him when he was an infant, and we made reading books part of our normal bedtime routine for Cooper, and then Dexter when he was born.
